Mapúa Wins 2019 Holcim Young Builders Challenge

“Sustainability has never been more imperative than now. It is important to instill this mindset to our future builders during their formative stage.” – Cara Ramirez, Vice President for Communications, Holcim Philippines

Senior Mapúa Architecture students Dexter Pangan, Czarrina Hernandez, Kendrick Supnet and Erik Joshua Isip of Mapúa University’s School of Architecture, Industrial Design, and The Built Environment bagged the top spot of Holcim Philippines, Inc.’s sustainable design contest, 2019 Young Builders Challenge (YBC).

I consider our win as a wake-up call for future builders on how important it is to focus on sustainable construction, as well as in promoting education,” Kendrick Supnet, member of the winning team

The team’s winning project, Haraya: A New Typology for K-12 Schools, proposes a playful school layout to enhance learners’ experience though active social interaction. The proposed project also aims to reduce construction and maintenance costs through by using renewable local materials.

Pangan, C.Hernandez, K. Supnet, E. Joshua Isip and class adviser Architect Perry Sanga during the awarding ceremony on May 5, 2019. The team won for a proposal for building spacious and cost-efficient public schools that are more conducive for learning.

“We realize that schools’ design lack some elements that would make it more conducive for learning and encouraging students’ imagination. We believe that by creating better facilities, we can provide better education for students. I am so happy that our team got this opportunity to share our ideas through this competition. I consider our win as a wake-up call for future builders on how important it is to focus on sustainable construction, as well as in promoting education,” Supnet said.

The Mapúa students topped 13 other entries from eight schools all over the country. They received a Php80,000 prize and Php20,000 for their school.

Young Builders Challenge aims to encourage aspiring builders to have a more holistic approach to building encouraging them to ensure projects not just economically viable but also environmentally and socially beneficial.

Meanwhile, juniors Marc Joseph Espino and Cheaster Marie Seville of University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Architecture won second place with a proposal for a modular and lightweight concrete house that is highly replicable and can easily adapt to the changing needs of the urban poor.

Ben John Basco, Christian Barrameda, and Paulo Piolino of Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science & Technology-College of Architecture and Fine Arts (EARIST-CAFA), bagged the third spot for a prototype coastal community center that would act as a base of operations for evacuation during storm surges.

Holcim Philippines Vice President for Communications Cara Ramirez commended the winners and all the participants for the outstanding design concepts the contest received from across the country.

“Sustainability has never been more imperative than now. It is important to instill this mindset to our future builders during their formative stage. We are glad to receive remarkable ideas from our future builders through this competition,” added Ramirez.

Holcim President and CEO John Stull also noted that “these proposals inspire us to continue advocating sustainable construction among our next generation of builders. The YBC is a testament that our young builders are capable of generating ideas that can benefit our society, leading to a more sustainable future.”

Inspired by the “Next Generation” category of the global design contest LafargeHolcim Awards for Sustainable Construction, the Young Builders Challenge aims to encourage aspiring builders to have a more holistic approach to building encouraging them to ensure projects not just economically viable but also environmentally and socially beneficial.

Menswear and Beautiful Beginnings | Easy Wedding Outfits You Can Steal From Your Salesman Friend

High schoolers have a prom night. Millennials have wedding invitations.

A wedding, regardless of the dress code written in the invitation letter, is a formal event. Treat it this way: High schoolers have a prom night. Millennials have wedding invitations.

Dressing up properly is the most thoughtful effort you can show to the just-married. That you are there to celebrate with them and it “shows”. Just for the record, the entire wedding ceremony costs a lot. When you are invited, you are indeed an important person to the love birds. Give them a favor, Bud. Dress up! Try Spezzato.

SPEZZATO LOOK 1: This mix works on green and gray or even white wedding motif.

“Beautiful Beginnings at the Waterfront” is a wedding and celebrations fair held every last weekend of May. To help couples prepare for their big day, the fair brings together Davao City’s most sought after wedding and event providers. More about it below.

You do not need to spend much though. When you run out of time hopping around rental shops, or when you are simply trying to be thrifty as a responsible adult,  Your Sales Professional friend got your back. Look for them on your friend list. Try to browse through their photos and identify some pieces you might want to borrow. Then, ask for it just like what friends are for.

Spezzato The Italian art of mixing and matching your suit jackets and trousers to come up with a new, mismatched suit.

Closers invest in their clothes. They update their closet up to 3 times in a year. They realize how important dressing up well is and that is exactly just one of the reasons why a Salesman is worth keeping as a friend.

Now, what are the pieces to borrow?

  1. Well-fitting suit jacket. The color may either be the motif of the wedding or complements to the shade of the motif. Light brown and gray are easy to mix and match. Never button the bottom button. Unbutton all when seated.
  2. Handkerchief as a pocket square. This transforms the usual office blazer to a stylish jacket that jives with the wedding colors. Just fold it the way you want for as long as it does not look messy. Coordinate its color to that of your pants or your dress shirt. Choose one.
  3. The office dress shirt. Light blue is a safe color. White is versatile.
  4. The tailored smart pants. Color should blend with the pocket square’s.
  5. Leather pieces: The shoes and the belt should have the same colors.

Treat it this way: High schoolers have a prom night. Millennials have wedding invitations.

Note that, when you are really that “close”, your Sales friend has those pieces which he hoards in the closet for very special socials. Dig your way to it. Steal these too:

  1. The neat, brushed up hair style and the tweezed and threaded eyebrows as well as the well shaved facial hair. Just see to it that the style fits your facial profile too. Remember to have all the necessary hair to be cut, 1 to 2 days before a special occasion just like a wedding day.
  2. Fortify the look with at least three sprays of a luxe scent. Not his daily work perfume. Ask for that special musk he keeps for socials.

SPEZZATO LOOK 2: This mix works on a blue or gray wedding motif.

It is not just of his vineyard of business connections. Your Sales friend helps you a lot on nuptials or any other special dressing up events too. Such is through the handsome work wardrobes in his closet,  which you can steal whenever you are invited at a friend’s wedding or even if that is on his own wedding. You are friends!

Three Traits I Learned From Dad That Made Selling Easier

Telling stories made me close a lot of accounts.

Whether or not you have that “ideal” relationship with your father, it is undeniable that we are greatly influenced with their qualities. As an idiom stresses, like father, like son.

For almost a decade in Selling, I was able to capitalize these three traits which resemble that of Dad’s. These made me thrive gracefully in the Selling industry.

52830CE1-5099-4558-868C-F72D3EE2343DDad is an advocate that alcohol is a social lubricant.

Never Prejudge

In my father’s words, “Dili gd nimo matag-na ang kaugmaun sa isa ka tawo”. I find this trait very useful in prospecting, banking leads and in creating business linkages. My father has always proved to me that letting a person feel important does not need any condition. I never saw my dad change his social treatment when talking to someone, may that be a friend from college who is now well-paid in his job or an acquaintance from the neighborhood he believes who is going to be big in time.

Be Vulnerable

I saw him cry. I heard him say sorry. I witnessed him reprimanded by Mom of being rowdy when drunk.  I even beheld him off-guarded when a friend proved his argument as weak during a boozing session. These all made him appear tough as a father to me. These made me respect him even more. His being human. His being vulnerable, transgressing both the social machismo and the omnipotent-omniscient father image.

This trait helps me a lot during the entire Selling process. That it is ok to let the prospect see how you get disappointed and hurt. That it is ok to be sorry. That it is alright to be wrong (to recognize what is the correct) and that does not make you less of a respectable and competent  professional. Be “You” on the sales table. Be more of a Sales Human than a Salesman.

Telling stories made me close a lot of accounts.

Know a Lot of Anecdotes

Dad never runs out of real stories. This has influenced me so much that I even use his anecdotes in every pre-pitch talk. It always feels that those stories are mine that it always warms up my prospect everytime. Humans just love being hooked in a storyline. This made me realize how persuasive one can become when people crave for the next part of your narration. Telling stories made me close a lot of accounts.

Just if you are asking, my father is not a salesman. Dad is a seafarer. A thoughtful  father who catches up from the 9 long months of being away from us, every time he is signed-off from his nautical contract. Happy Father’s Day also to your dad, may you be so like him or just a little bit.

RANKED : MY FAVORITE KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS

These five Krispy Kreme doughnuts are ranked based on (1) how romantic it blends with my hot coffee and (2) how not so overwhelming the sweetness while still being a doughnut (you know what I mean).

279F4958-1C8E-4026-9A73-47EA5FB4031F

BACON AND CHEESE RING-FILLED and BRÛLÉE CHEESE RING-FILLED | These are pizza-doughnuts for me. I love to nibble the cheesy taste in every bite of these before sipping my usual creamy coffee.

234A1058-DD5D-4756-86D3-D02FAF3970ED

ORIGINAL GLAZED | The Classic! Always be the first and legal wife of my hot black coffee. Nuff said.

CHOCO PEANUT BUTTER RING FILLED | It looks too sweet but the sprinkled sea salt and roasted hazelnut tastefully neutralized the sweetness on this morsel. With lots of proteins too 💪🏼.

DD71E158-77AF-4E75-9C35-A3C9F6F39C58

CHOCOLATE GLAZE | This is chocolately naive, and that is just perfect for me. I can eat only one each of the other 4 (in the rank) but I will always consume 2 of this. Every time!

DARK CHOCOLATE GLITZ with Davao’s award-winning Malagos Chocolate (below is Blueberry Bliss Glaze) | The subtle bitter taste amidst the sweetness is truly a unique doughnut experience in every bite. I love this with a creamier coffee.

Doughnuts will always be the best office morsel for me. Always be the submissive palatable better half of a warm caffeine, whether or not it is a winning day at work. It is just always a winning day when you’re getting a doughnut for snack. That is indeed my sole reason why I celebrate World Doughnut Day!

Happy World Doughnut Day, Closers!
