John Llamas Wins 2021 Davao Blogger Of The Year, Reacts To The Winning Nomination Statements

When you finally find the purpose for a passion, that is when you start doing anything for it consistently.

“I was in a virtual sales meeting with a client when the announcement was posted on the FB page. When the notification beep started to sound more of an alarm tone saying that I am tagged on a comment by several Davao Bloggers, I thought: I may have won!” John Llamas, the content creator behind the blog, Johndappercloser, and social media handle @Johndappercloser reminisced the winning moment. He is the 2021 Davao Blogger of Year. It is the most coveted annual accolade given to an official member of the Davao Bloggers Society who best represents the ideals and aspirations of the organization. This award is given to the blogger who has best served the organization and the community in 2021.

We were able to obtain some of the winning nomination statements from the declaration post. We asked John to react to the quotes on why fellow members endorsed him as a candidate for such an award.

I created Johndappercloser in 2015 simply as a creative outlet. No brand partners. No regular readers. I went back to writing just like in high school and college months after being promoted as the youngest Sales Manager of the one-call-close sales company that I am working for. This time, I was writing about the corporate lifestyle – sales strategies, motivation, corporate style. When my blog statistics started showing that I may have gained traction from readers, that was when I thought that there is a classified group of corporate people out there who actually related to the topics I write about. That was when I started publishing blog posts more frequently.

Joining DBS in 2017 added dimensions to my blog articles. The brand collaborations coordinated by the organization helped me discover the intricate skill of weaving every brand’s promise into my readers’ work-life dealings through every post I publish. This indeed widened my audience.

Everyone was adjusting when we took over the office as a new set of officers. Our work in maintaining the external relationship of the organization with brands and agencies was really put into a test battery. It was not an easy negotiation every time. Being mindful though, of the organization’s strength and reputation plus the collective efforts of the officers made every partnership successful.

Indeed, the most challenging negotiations that I have participated in so far happened when I was the incumbent VP for External Affairs of a premier blogging community, while the world was facing a pandemic.

It is flattering that my fellow creators describe my Instagram photos as “high-quality”. Updating an IG feed was actually a challenge during the pandemic. Limited areas to shoot for content inside my living space as well as sporadic creative blocks as results of worrisome scoops from news channels, were just a few of the hurdles that we have to keep on overcoming to maintain the visual narrative of our handle. Knowing the core message that you want to resonate as a brand and sticking to a well-thought-out preset are helpful ways to enjoy creating intentional content on Instagram.

After a series of nominations in Davao Blog Awards since joining Davao Bloggers Society (DBS) in 2017, http://www.johndappercloser.com (JDC) bags its first recognition as 2021 Outstanding Davao Blog.

“It was like Leonardo Dicaprio’s journey to his first Oscars.” John Llamas, Chief Content Strategist of JDC described the experience. The accolade was presented by Maria Jose, DBS Trustee during the DBS Sparkly Night – Virtual Christmas Party 2021 via the organization’s official Google Meet account, December 11, 8PM.

From trophy to a virtual badge. Due to advisories regulating social gatherings, this year’s DBA winners were given a special badge that winners may use and post on their blog and social media posts.

“Before winning his first Oscar® for Best Actor in 2016 for his performance in “The Revenant”, Dicaprio received a series of nominations as Best Actor for The Aviator in 2005, for Blood Diamond in 2007, and for Wolf of Wall Street in 2014, which by the way is my favorite sales-related movie of him portraying a real-life Closer, Jordan Belfort,” Llamas explained. “These movies showed how masterful Dicaprio is in his craft. Most movie fans even suggest that these deserved him earlier Oscars wins. However, Dicaprio just kept on improving his acting prowess instead of allowing any accolade to validate his caliber as an actor. That is exactly the inspiration that I want to amplify out from our first award – Keep improving. Do not ever stop beefing up your talents just because someone told you that you are already great or that you are trying so hard. Do not ever stop beefing up your talents at all!” Llamas emphasized.

There were no niche categories and other special categories for this year’s Davao Blog Awards. Rather, the top blogs with excellent content that are aligned with the vision of the organization were given the “Outstanding Blog of 2021” Award.
