Grocery shopping after all is a task for survival acuity.

Below is the complete A-Z grocery list with photos. Scroll down.
You work hard on weekdays. You unwind at one of the city’s entertainment hubs on weekends. A typical “Yuppie” – a young urban professional. Also, you shop your own grocery needs as you listed, as you budgeted, as you scheduled.
Grocery shopping is an “#adulting” agendum. Who is not doing his own grocery shopping as an adult by the way? Your mastery of it reflects how skillful you are in terms of budgeting your fund for food from payday to payday while partaking healthy meals to fuel you in every workday. It is safe to say that a well-experienced grocery shopper is financially and physiologically healthy. You do not agree if you are not. Tell me. Are you?
MY GROCERY SHOPPING LIST
The day after every payday is my ideal grocery shopping day. My grocery list on the other hand has a 60% regular and 40% elective choices.
sliced bread (I get excited making my own sandwich for work.)
Protein: broccoli, peanuts, eggs, meat
carrots, tomatoes, packed sliced fruits
Rice and oatmeal with milk
canned tuna, canned corned beef, instant pancit canton
detergent, exfoliating and bactericidal soaps, hair conditioner
gargling solution and whitening toothpaste
wet wipes, rubbing alcohol (My work requires a lot of hand shakes and loads of talking.)
The 40% is influenced by first, the kind of spread I want in my work sandwich for the next two weeks. Second, the recipes I want to try after from social media food pages or health articles I read weeks before. Lastly, the cravings for Mr Chips or moist chocolate cake or Spam. I set aside PhP 2,000 every two weeks for food.
if you have the opportunity to get something of better quality (imported or local) at more affordable bar codes (S&R member), why not punch it in?!
My list is fun and flexible. I make health-conscious food choices by considering the simple Go-Grow-Glow taxonomy. My grooming list is basic. My sandwich spread recipes are ever changing. There are items in the list which need to be re-supplied every shop. There are also those which can be bought in larger package to hoard. Larger packs help you save both budget and shopping energy.
How I stock supplies and save budget through the S&R Members’ Treat Sale
The S&R Members’ Treat Sale is a grocery sale to look forward twice a year. It happens every March and September (Set a reminder on your smartphone, Yuppie!). This is when quality imported grocery items are priced at 50% less.
What makes me choose to grocery shop at S&R is beyond the product connotation of “imported”, “stateside”, “pang-mayaman/ pang-dato”. I support local products too (Sukang Pinakurat, Lucky Me Pancit Canton and Holiday Corned Beef join the conversation). Food Regulatory Agencies from other countries though, have stringent and thoughtful criteria on retaining nutrients from their food products. The advanced technology of their food industry is a supplementary factor too. These make the products more ideal for hoarding. Buy it at large portions. Stock it for a month extended supply than usual. The taste is obviously unique too. A two-month taste break from the usual flavors makes your gastronomic routine more appetizing. Finally, if you have the opportunity to get something of better quality (imported or local) at more affordable bar codes (S&R member), why not punch it in?!
S&R (Sol and Robert Price) is a membership-shopping club modeled after the warehouse shopping chains introduced in the United States. Most of the imported products offered are in club packs which include fresh produce and fruits, Australian/New Zealand beef, Western grocery brands from cereals to snacks, chocolates, wines and spirits. It also offers consumer electronics and appliances, along with health and beauty products. It is currently the biggest reseller of imported quality products at very competitive prices in the Philippines. (https://www.coscocapital.com/segment.do?category_id=7346)
The list below is comprised with food choices deemed as basic, healthy and easy to prepare for an always on the go Yuppie. It also has essential products for grooming as well as electives for Summer (S&R Members’ Treat Sale – March) and Christmas/ Year-End (S&R Members’ Treat Sale – September).

Grocery shopping is as fun as it is fortifying too. Imagine! You are not that toddler anymore who needs to do a sales pitch (and say please) to mommy just to “add to cart” that chocolate or junk food on your hand. Freedom is fun (But be smart too).
Grocery shopping after all is a task for survival acuity. It is rewarding throughout your aging work-life “timeline” when you get better and better at doing it. For as long as we need to earn for our life goals everyday, we also have to eat in every meal. Thus, we also need to shop more budget- and health-consciously, as budgeted, as scheduled.

RANKED : MY FAVORITE KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS
These five Krispy Kreme doughnuts are ranked based on (1) how romantic it blends with my hot coffee and (2) how not so overwhelming the sweetness while still being a doughnut (you know what I mean).
BACON AND CHEESE RING-FILLED and BRÛLÉE CHEESE RING-FILLED | These are pizza-doughnuts for me. I love to nibble the cheesy taste in every bite of these before sipping my usual creamy coffee.
ORIGINAL GLAZED | The Classic! Always be the first and legal wife of my hot black coffee. Nuff said.
CHOCO PEANUT BUTTER RING FILLED | It looks too sweet but the sprinkled sea salt and roasted hazelnut tastefully neutralized the sweetness on this morsel. With lots of proteins too 💪🏼.
CHOCOLATE GLAZE | This is chocolately naive, and that is just perfect for me. I can eat only one each of the other 4 (in the rank) but I will always consume 2 of this. Every time!
DARK CHOCOLATE GLITZ with Davao’s award-winning Malagos Chocolate (below is Blueberry Bliss Glaze) | The subtle bitter taste amidst the sweetness is truly a unique doughnut experience in every bite. I love this with a creamier coffee.
Doughnuts will always be the best office morsel for me. Always be the submissive palatable better half of a warm caffeine, whether or not it is a winning day at work. It is just always a winning day when you’re getting a doughnut for snack. That is indeed my sole reason why I celebrate World Doughnut Day!
Happy World Doughnut Day, Closers!

The Tahitian vanilla component is not actually more of a taste bud experience but an “air in the mouth” sensation.
Starbucks Philippines offers back its Tahitian Vanilla Macchiato. Have you tried it? Here is how it is sizzled. Available in hot, iced and blended, It is an infusion of (1) velvety steamed milk (2) with aromatic, caramelly Tahitian vanilla syrup, topped with Starbucks Signature Espresso and finished with (3) vanilla bean specks and (4) vanilla drizzle in a classic double crosshatch pattern.
I always want my coffee as hot. I love Starbucks’ mainstay caramel macchiato. Though it tends to be too sweet at times, I still enjoy asking for a free glass of water especially when I am on the last 1/4 of the portion. Considering that this new drink is a “caramelly” vanilla syrup made beverage with the intriguing “Tahitian” flair, I chose to try a new drink in its blended format for the first time. I preconceive it being way too sweet with the assumption that, the hot version might not be ideally sweet for me (as caramel macchiato being the sweetness reference) and that the ice in the blended version may at least try to neutralize the sweetness.
How it really tastes?
Not really too sweet. Totally the opposite of what I have expected that it might be irritant to the (my) throat. It smells the expected subtle vanilla sweetness. The first palate experience on every first sip is dictated with a caramelly sensation. As you try to take time enjoying, the after taste is dominated with the Tahitian vanilla component which is not actually more of a taste bud experience but an “air in the mouth” sensation. I would never judge a Macchiato or any drink’s sweetness ever again plainly through its vanilla smell nor through knowing that it contains a vanilla. A revelation from this taste test is that vanilla, Tahitian Vanilla to be specific, has a sweetness which is not from the tongue. And that for me is delicious, delightful and healthy.
This is a new palate experience every Macchiato fan should try. I would try the hot version soon.
There is an only-of-its-kind shrimp diner in town serving exceptional bags of sauteed, sauced shrimp you love to get mess with. Devour. And bring with you the tabs. You or your friend might need it. Mess responsibly.
We always have that friend who is always thankful of over-the-counter antihistamine tabs. Why? Because Shrimp is Lifer! (according to one of those 4 friends on my mind) And no other seafood restaurant gratifies best those episodes of cephalic and gastronomic shrimp cravings but the Davao homegrown, Blue Posts Boiling Crabs and Shrimps.
Blue Posts Boiling Crabs and Shrimps Branches:
Bajada, Davao City
Lanang Business Park, Davao City
SM Ecoland, Davao City
The Block-SM North Edsa, Metro Manila
SM Mall of Asia, Metro Manila
O Square Green Hills, Metro Manila
Seascape Village, Pasay City
There is that bite! One does not need to be a Michelin Chef to qualify a best textured shrimp. What I know is, one keeps on being messy with shrimps at Blue Posts when he knows how shrimp should be sauteed. There is always that one familiar satisfying bite which your teeth, tongue and jaw unanimously enjoy! When there is an adjective as “fork tender” (meat), let it be coined that there is a “teeth tender” shrimp. It is at Blue Posts.
The Sambal sauce. I stop asking for the vinegar dip when they start offering this. I have always been a lover of Asian flavors. When I had my Singapore-Penang trip last 2016, I went home as a certified Sambal lover. That sweet, salty yet spicy sauce slather on an al dente bag of sauteed shrimps? Salivating! The Crew went to our table and ask. Refill Sir? (Ano po, Garlic Lemon Butter, Sambal or the Blue Posts Boiled?) You know the answer!
The nautical interiors . The ambiance engulfs you that every edible portion you will try as you dine with your bare hands, is all fresh and prepared thoughtfully. I smell the sea inside. Perhaps it is because of the fishing nets, paddles and life rings which your sensation associates to a dining table set just in front of the briny atmosphere of the sea shore waiting for the fresh catch. It feels composed inside. Not until the bag is finally open for partaking with that shrimp-infused redolence. Attack!
The costume. One of the crew approached me and offered to don my bib. I felt like a master. There is just this satisfaction boost when you feel like you are being served with things you know you can manage to do but someone offered it sincerely and you do not have a choice but to give in. I remember that as intense as I salivate whenever I think of the shrimps. When the food-grade wax paper is rolled out. When our gloves snugly fit inter-finger. The drama just makes the whole experience more gastronomically memorable! These actually appear to be more of ritual than function since me and my appetite know seemly that I would still choose to be messy despite all the donning. These are Instagram props!
Indeed, there is a lot of fish in the ocean of seafood restaurants. But, there is an only-of-its-kind shrimp diner in town serving exceptional bags of sauteed, sauced shrimp you love to get mess with. Devour. And bring with you the tabs. You or your friend might need it. Mess responsibly.
Blue Posts offers 911 Shrimp Fever. An unlimited shrimp for 2 at P911 only until December 8, 2017. Call for reservations now!

“Hot caramel macchiato in a mug please.”
This year’s Starbucks Christmas menu seemly rephrase this usual plea to my barista. Definitely be spending more of the days to Christmas at Starbucks, may it be a sales meeting or a usual “Coffee is for Closers” off-day. For this season, It would be,
“Hot toffee nut crunch latte in the red cup please. And roasted turkey and chicken with bacon on cranberry bread.”

“The “Bawug” part of the jowl where layers of gelatinous fat melt and slather into the layers of meat once grilled.”
I was then ambling along the streets of Kowloon city, hunting for a famous Nasi-Satay when I prognosticated “Someday, Filipino street food will have its own taste of fame in the global dining table. Food evangelists from other countries will also visit and search for our street food like what I am doing here in Hong Kong.”.
A year and five months from that random prophecy, a list which recognizes the world’s best street food made me one of the proudest Filipino street food disciples. Another yardstick for calibre street food apart from the Michelin Guide, the World Street Food Congress included 5 Philippine Street food stalls in their list of 50 World Street Food Masters for 2017. One of these five, is in Davao.
Igniting more flame to every tourist’s gastronomic adventure in Davao city, Dood’s Ihaw-Ihaw (Now Dod’s), a humble carinderia/ barbeque stall near the rotunda (traffic circle) on the vertex of Roxas and Ponciano streets, fronting the City’s Postal Building, made it to the 46th spot as a World Street Food Master for their “Sinugbang Panga” (wood fire grilled Tuna Jowl).
The 12-year-old tandem of the marinade sauce and the basting oil according to Mrs. Dod’s, is the secret why their grilled tuna is peerless amongst the other versions you have tried. Apart from that, the couple’s choice of serving only the “Bigeye” tuna species also gives a distinct quality to their award winning dish.
“This species is really the one that is made for grilling. Especially the “Bawug” part of the jowl where layers of gelatinous fat melt and slather into the layers of meat once grilled.” Mrs. Dod’s explained. I agree. Every spoon of freshly-cooked steamed rice deserves to be slathered with those melts from the grilled tuna. Drizzle it with “sawsawan” (Yakitori sauce-like dip) before finally dunking it! Lami!

Hop in to any jeepney that passes by Ponciano St. and ask one of the ever helpful Davao jeepney drivers to drop you at the Davao Light Building. Right across the street, the redolence of an andante-grilled fish meat would smoothly guide your way. Be there by 9am to get the “Bawug” cut. When you want some real Davao street food dining immersion, lunch and dinner until 10PM is such a touristy jostle. Wander along Roxas Street Market, it is just a block away, after.

*Also on the list are (14) hawkers from Singapore with the Michelin starred Hill Street Tai Hwa at the 1st rank for their Bak Chor Mee, (7) from Indonesia, (6) from Malaysia, (5) from Thailand, (4) from China, (3) from Vietnam (2) from USA, (2) from Mexico and (1) each from Taiwan and India.
The inclusion of five Masters from the Philippines for the list’s first edition is such an uplifting accolade to Pinoys, especially to a Filipino street food advocate like me. The Philippines has still a lot of award-worthy dishes which are expected to sizzle every world wide food award-giving body. I am excited.
In the meantime, when you visit Davao, trot like a hobo in this city which is not just known for its civil calmness but also now known as home of a World Master in grilled tuna jowls according to the World Street Food Congress Council.
Who made the list:
*Anthony Bourdain, world renowned television personality, author and avid street food advocate *KF Seetoh, Makansutra’s Founder/CEO *James Oseland, Author of one of 2007’s Time Asia and the New York Times best books, Cradle of Flavor *Johnny Chan, Top China TV food host and winemaker (http://wsfcongress.com/world-street-food-congress/)
