Monthlong Liveblog | Birth Month Shopping Haul Boxes

We are all shoppers. Set. Schedule. Shop!

I shop more in September than in December. The first reason is, I intend to spoil myself with rewards during my birth month (I work like hell while waiting for September.) Second, I gradually start shopping for Christmas gift items earlier to avoid the Yuletide bustle from sensationalized “Christmas Sale” and “Year-End Sale”. How about you? Have you set a shopping schedule for your self?

This month-long liveblog is dedicated to document my shopping behavior throughout September. Concurrently, it aspires to review the items which you might be interested of buying as well. Johndappercloser earns when you shop such items through the links below. It is rest assured that we only feature here an item which we vouch for quality and reasonability.

First Haul: The Vax Box

Shopping Haul, September 5.

Knit Vest (Khaki, Medium) : This is the item that I am most excited to wear from the first haul. I intend to strut with this as a sole top on my anti-Covid19 vax day. (Well, let us see!). Furthermore, with its color and fit, this is a perfect layering piece both for the virtual Yuletide invitations and  year-end branch e-gatherings at work. SHOP IT HERE NOW: https://shp.ee/xnub2y7

Sweat Short (Brown) : Tentatively, this is the pair-in-mind of the vest for my vax day garb. I have been really looking for a loose white pants though for a better look. Nevertheless, this short is a sure favorite piece for home workout, lounging and athliesure-ly strolls. I also got a bloody red one. SHOP IT HERE NOW: https://shp.ee/rn5b6kp

Cylinder Bag (White) : I find the shape of this bag really unique and functional. This would be a complementary accessory for those comfortable fits you don for errands (wearing this for vax day as well). Its size looks easy to carry yet can contain your extra mask, alcohol spray, face shield, quarantine pass and your phone. An extra shirt can still hitch as well. SHOP IT HERE NOW: https://shp.ee/qbw8t5p

Silicone Mask (Transparent) : I really do not guarantee the protective function of this mask when used alone. I purchased this because I plan to wear it with a brown surgical mask as an inner mask to enhance filtration power. Aesthetically, that way it gives a look like you are only wearing one mask. Consider this a double masking style tip. Try it on! SHOP IT HERE NOW: https://shp.ee/tdjj7i7

Automatic Alcohol Dispenser (White) : Seamless hand disinfection! If you are like me who is whiny to the challenging act of spraying a sanitizer onto my palms, you will love to buy more than one of this dispenser with ultra-sensitive infrared sensor. Perhaps, one for each room in your house. Easy to refill, battery life saver, non-drip design. SHOP IT HERE NOW: https://shp.ee/fz7u287

Shopping is owning what you need. Thus, we are all shoppers. We buy things that we need from time to time. The only bad thing one gets from shopping though, is when one does it without a schedule, thus compromising the other financial needs. Do not just shop because it is a leisurely thing to do nor since the item is cheaper. You can “add to cart” all the time. But “check out” deliberately.

By scheduling, this means shopping at the set time. A time when your target budget is already available. Set. Schedule. Shop! Until the next box!

Menswear and Christmases in the Wild | 3 Looks for Safari-themed Parties

Following the dress code is a social courtesy.

Christmas parties, may it be hosted by your company, your clan or a comrade, turn out to be merrier (and more Instagam-worthy) when guests join the fun of dressing up according to the prescribed party outfit. Equally significant to the merriment, is social courtesy. Following the dress code is an example of that gathering etiquette.

What if this year, the invitation states “Safari Night”, “Christmas in the Wild”, or “African Christmas”?  Here is a three-look style guide to mingle!

A safari style color palette for your reference.

The colors in the safari style palette are easy to mix and match. These colors exude both manliness and the flora and fauna of the wilderness. Before going to shops just to buy a new piece for the party, skim through your closet first. You might already own one or even all the pieces with the safari colors that you can work on in achieving a fitting look for the party.

ABOUT THE LOOK: This is a Preppy Metro-Casual outfit. A smart casual look consists of a golden brown knitted polo and a green chino with light brown plaid pattern. Plaid suggests both the preppy and yuletide vibe. Knit is an opportune fabric for the Christmas breeze. Complete the look with a black tasseled leather loafer.

Brand Partners, Thank You!

True to all other dress codes, identify a celebrity or influencer, a movie/ TV series character who looks good at wearing it. Or an occupation who is associated to the theme. Identify and wear not just the outfit but as well as the persona. Treat your look as a costume and strut it with the associated attitude.

ABOUT THE LOOK : This is a “Lux Tent Safari Dinner” attire. A semi-formal safari dinner look inspired from both a hunter and an affluent safari tourist. The all-white monochrome of the pair is accessorized with safari-colored scarf and a safari hat with plaid pattern. Fabric for the undershirt and polo is light cotton while the pants’ is made out from linen. Finish the look with a brown tasseled leather loafer and a just-came-from-the-safari-trip vibe of satisfaction.

Equally significant to the merriment, following the dress code is a social manner.

SAFARI LOOK 3

Wear the Print | The Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao “Bold and Bright Holidays” Christmas Tree Lighting 2019

Prints (and patterns) are loud details to show how good are you at following the prescribed party attire. There are prints which are synonymous to the motif. These can be considered as safe, easy and predictable choices. Just be that wearer who gives an extraordinary bearing to such prints. Stand out as you own it “not” the way everyone wearing the same print is doing.

ABOUT THE LOOK : Here is a “Classique Leopard” garb. A cocktail night look with the classic animal print long sleeve. The shirt is purposely unbuttoned for a seductive play of the print. The pair is a complementing light brown pants with a high waist cut for a more dapper stand. Climax the ensemble with a well-polished black tassel loafer.

There are ways to pull off a “de rigueur“ outfit without spending much. Know the elements of the motif. These are the palettes, prints and persons associated to the theme. Be creative. Strut your look as it is your own style. Ultimately, enjoy being a true merrymaker with substance and social manner as you party!

You are going to a party to mingle, right? Then start “mingling” by dressing up for such reason – to mingle, to socialize, to associate, to mix together, to dress like. And remember, Christmas socials should get wilder every year. Merry Christmas!

STYLE PICKS: Habi Kadayawan 2019

Among the three editions, the 2019 run was thus far with the most entries for men.

A convertible scarf from the Bagobo tribe and a Kimono suit jacket detailed with Ovu-Manuvo bead works were just two of the ethnic-contemporary menswear pieces which competed for this year’s Habi Kadayawan. Among the three editions, the 2019 run was thus far with the most entries for men.

Habi Kadayawan is a fashion accessories design competition held every August as part of Davao city’s celebration of Kadayawan Festival. It is a collaborated project of the City Government and the Davao Fashion and Design Council. Design entries are inspired by the rich and diverse 11 tribes of the City. (Photos are from the Davao City Government Facebook Page)

Apart from the usual categories for Fashion Accessories namely professional, hobbyist and student, a Luxe Apparel for professional designers category was added to this year’s competition. Parameters for the competing designers and their tribal inspirations were not limited anymore within the Davao Region. Starting this year, wearable articulations from any ethno-linguistic tribe found in Mindanao were qualified to compete.

Menswear Picks : Habi Kadayawan 2019

SCARF-TO-SLING BAG CONVERTIBLE ACCESSORY by Bae Arlene

D8092D06-CFFF-46EE-805B-EAEB35751685
Tagged as Pangulabe, this convertible scarf is worn as Tangkulo, a headpiece of male tribal elders that symbolizes royalty and bravery. It can also be worn as San Ning, a woven and beaded sling bag worn by the Bagobo tribe as part of their traditional attire. The convertible feature from the usual scarf to a functional sling bag is such an ethnic styling treasure. Can you imagine if the designer would add pieces with neutral colors of brown or olive green? I would love to own two more!

PINK SUIT WITH TNALAK SEWN SLEEVES by Noga Vesorio

A formal wear from the three-piece collection entry of Vesorio’s “Sleek Symmetry”. Behold how stylishly cut strips of T’nalak fiber on a dandy colored suit highlight a man’s torso, shoulders and arms even when he is so wrapped in a suit. The inner shirt, with T’nalak strips on its chest pocket (not photographed) exudes its own sleekness even without the jacket.

KIMONO SUIT JACKET WITH OVU-MANUVO BEAD WORKS by Jun Artajo

82613A62-8209-4928-9491-C0A790E8E7C9
Bagging this year’s third spot in the Luxe Apparel category, this blue formal menswear with an Asian kick is from the three-piece collection entry of Artajo’s “Dez Vouz”. It features geometries with Ovu-Manuvo tribe bead works.

SCULPTURED COPPER WIRE NECKLACE by Dennis Almoroto

23675EAC-B637-43BE-9E27-C47353B0FABC
Won this year’s Grand Price for the Hobbyist category, “Macodee” is a neck piece made from electrical copper wire accented with pears. Created by Almoroto, a waste-to-art advocate jewelry designer, the human wire sculpture holding hand in hand embodies unity and wisdom of the 11 tribes in Davao. Looking  forward how this necklace could be expanded with a version for men. It looks minimalist and downright stylish.

T’NALAK-MADE ACCESSORIES

T’nalak is made from weaved Abaca fibers. It is a traditional craft of the T’boli tribe from South Cotabato. Seeing these accessories made from it is truly a style statement with functional features.

F7B59CA2-1113-42C1-8013-4043856796F4
Harness Bag by Untamed Kulture is streetwear made from Tnalak fiber, accented with polymer clay and high quality harness straps. Baseball cap by Mei Medalla is made from a T’boli woven fabric of Abaca, Tnalak. A high fashion belt bag as part of this year’s winning Luxe Apparel collection of Mark Pabon tagged as Living the Dream inspired from the Dream weavers of South Cotabato.

Honorable Mentions

Props also to the finalists behind these menswear.

0ECB07E4-AAEB-4E6B-BCE3-08F7FEC0A4A6
A green Kimono suit with Inaul sleeves inspired by the Moro ethnic group of the Maguindanaon by Gelmar John Buyan. A brown suit from “Kapa de Garbo” of Bonnie Adaza that complements the traditional blazers of the Tagakalo Tribe.

There were definitely two reasons that made this year’s “Habi” such a prelude to a promising tribe-inspired fashion spectacle to look forward every August.

First, the competition is now pan-Mindanao. This southern Philippine island is truly an ethnic bliss adorned with rich tribal artistry that the fashion world deserves to see.

Second, is the influx of Menswear entries. The participation of these style pieces for men proposes that a “Clothing Collection” is complementary. There are pieces for him and pieces for her. Thus, inviting more male audience (and designers) in the coming Habi seasons. See you then!

“Clothing pieces may be stiff as “For Him” and “For Her”. But, we should be reminded though that “Dressing up” on the other hand is fluid, is freestyle. For him, for her, for him who wants to look like her or for her who wants to look like him, for them, for us.

Winners: Habi Kadayawan 2019

Menswear and Beautiful Beginnings | Easy Wedding Outfits You Can Steal From Your Salesman Friend

High schoolers have a prom night. Millennials have wedding invitations.

A wedding, regardless of the dress code written in the invitation letter, is a formal event. Treat it this way: High schoolers have a prom night. Millennials have wedding invitations.

Dressing up properly is the most thoughtful effort you can show to the just-married. That you are there to celebrate with them and it “shows”. Just for the record, the entire wedding ceremony costs a lot. When you are invited, you are indeed an important person to the love birds. Give them a favor, Bud. Dress up! Try Spezzato.

SPEZZATO LOOK 1: This mix works on green and gray or even white wedding motif.

“Beautiful Beginnings at the Waterfront” is a wedding and celebrations fair held every last weekend of May. To help couples prepare for their big day, the fair brings together Davao City’s most sought after wedding and event providers. More about it below.

You do not need to spend much though. When you run out of time hopping around rental shops, or when you are simply trying to be thrifty as a responsible adult,  Your Sales Professional friend got your back. Look for them on your friend list. Try to browse through their photos and identify some pieces you might want to borrow. Then, ask for it just like what friends are for.

Spezzato The Italian art of mixing and matching your suit jackets and trousers to come up with a new, mismatched suit.

Closers invest in their clothes. They update their closet up to 3 times in a year. They realize how important dressing up well is and that is exactly just one of the reasons why a Salesman is worth keeping as a friend.

Now, what are the pieces to borrow?

  1. Well-fitting suit jacket. The color may either be the motif of the wedding or complements to the shade of the motif. Light brown and gray are easy to mix and match. Never button the bottom button. Unbutton all when seated.
  2. Handkerchief as a pocket square. This transforms the usual office blazer to a stylish jacket that jives with the wedding colors. Just fold it the way you want for as long as it does not look messy. Coordinate its color to that of your pants or your dress shirt. Choose one.
  3. The office dress shirt. Light blue is a safe color. White is versatile.
  4. The tailored smart pants. Color should blend with the pocket square’s.
  5. Leather pieces: The shoes and the belt should have the same colors.

Treat it this way: High schoolers have a prom night. Millennials have wedding invitations.

Note that, when you are really that “close”, your Sales friend has those pieces which he hoards in the closet for very special socials. Dig your way to it. Steal these too:

  1. The neat, brushed up hair style and the tweezed and threaded eyebrows as well as the well shaved facial hair. Just see to it that the style fits your facial profile too. Remember to have all the necessary hair to be cut, 1 to 2 days before a special occasion just like a wedding day.
  2. Fortify the look with at least three sprays of a luxe scent. Not his daily work perfume. Ask for that special musk he keeps for socials.

77DC005D-E2DF-4AA0-8A56-53B43CD996EB
SPEZZATO LOOK 2: This mix works on a blue or gray wedding motif.

It is not just of his vineyard of business connections. Your Sales friend helps you a lot on nuptials or any other special dressing up events too. Such is through the handsome work wardrobes in his closet,  which you can steal whenever you are invited at a friend’s wedding or even if that is on his own wedding. You are friends!

Picking a fabric with travel friendly features is a different story. It exudes your style but eludes you from a fat luggage. Are you ready for the next takeoff?

One of the most touristic things to do in the destination is to dress up like a visitor while being not too flamboyant to intimidate the locals. That garb which gives you comfort, function and the desired immersive vibe of your own flair of style while en route.

This series is dedicated to the sets of outfit one can get inspiration from while travelling. Every episode is also infused with ideas you can add in your itinerary like food and cafe stops, tourist spots, and tech solutions for services while traveling. Our first touchdown, South Cebu!

0092cac8-0a9e-45fd-8cc0-7553690d7fbaA baseball cap, a vertically textured tee, jeans and my favorite tasseled loafer wrapped my touchdown-to-first-stop look. I also brought with me a jacket which complements the shades of the cap, the shirt and the shoes. The cap, the jacket and the jeans insulate heat while at the airport and during in-flights, especially during early morning flights. Easy to slip-on foot wear like this gives you less hassle during the airport security procedures upon check in.

(1) The rates are fixed no matter how heavy would the traffic be towards your destination. This also deters the possibility that your driver might try to take the longer route to charge you bigger from the ideal rate. That is very important to travelers who are new to the place. (2) The en route comfort and exclusivity. You seem to have a personal driver and own car. What is a few more tens in exchange of that convenience?

HOT AND HOLY IN SOUTH CEBU

Hot Morning Stops : Whale Shark Watching and Tumalog Falls, Oslob

I chose a low U tank and a printed swimming shorts to enjoy both the ocean with the sharks and the cold spring from the waterfalls. I wore a long sleeve polo over the tank-short combo for both style and protection. The entire look shows a monochrome green tropical look finished with a dark brown Panama hat without its bow.

I easily rolled these sleeves when it got humid while it served as a bathrobe every after the water romance.

Holy After-Lunch Visit: Simala Shrine, Sibonga

Just like visiting in any religious tourist spot, we have to be in a respectful drape. Thus, I folded a pair of smart linen pieces for this church visit which was light to carry in my back pack early that morning.

This was my favorite outfit for this trip. The entire look showed a smart casual appeal made touristy because of the linen material. Fortified such appeal with the leather shoes and the same hat I used earlier that day, but now with a hankie that serves as its bow.

928a2751-1022-4445-b713-29e016762198

This was the most relaxing part of the trip. I thanked for the blessings and surpassed trials from 2018, both in the family affairs and corporate matters. I also asked for wisdom on my plans for 2019. I was relieved, thankful and confident after praying. The feeling was as light and breathable as the linen that touches my skin every time the wind blows as I strolled throughout the vast temple.

Spent few more minutes taking photos of the impressive European design of the church and of course some Gram-worthy photos of the place as my background.

LINEN IN THE CITY

f5bc7205-bacb-4398-8c66-8c09ee36b1c8The third day started late. After dressing up, we tried Gibb’s for lunch before heading to SM Seaside. The Spicy Honey Garlic wings were my favorites. Urban Cebu was hot and humid that day. Thus, I chose to wear another linen pair. This time, I opted a long sleeved linen shirt since part of our itinerary was to visit the Sto Niño Basilica later that day (but unfortunately, it was already closed by the time we arrived. TIP: Be there not later than 5PM).

Linen is a travel friendly fabric. Apart from it is light in your luggage, it is also easy to dry. I washed my linen pants that night as I arrived in my stay since it was stained with chocolates I ate during the long bus rides. Don’t judge me. Smirk.

I met with a close friend from high school at SM Seaside. My chum recommended “10 Dove Street Confectionery” so eagerly and persuaded me to catch up there over cakes and coffee. I loved the Mango Pandan slice.

TAKEOFF LOOK

c89c6d72-3198-4386-83ec-ed2804ce7541A cream tee, jeans and the leather loafer sealed my last-stop-to-takeoff look. Accented it with a hankie-turned-to-scarf to blend with the French ambiance of La Vie Parissiene. Yes, Airport Looks tend to be with similar style pieces. Same material, same heat insulating purpose while inside a wintry airport and aircraft.

It was my second visit here. Chose the enclosed part of the restaurant this time. Enjoyed the night with Shanpelino and pizza. Shot some photos, did online updating and reminisced funny travel stories from the previous days with the team while sipping some Moscato in betweens.

We ended the night at 10 PM to prepare for our flight by 6AM. After packing up my things, I sneaked for some alone time with a cocktail at a nearby bar from our stay. Drafted my prognostications for 2019 on my phone’s Notes. On top of it was “Sell handsomely,Travel handsomely.”. Then, I Grab-ed our ride to the airport.

We all search for ideas of what to wear on the specific stops of our trip. Picking a fabric with travel friendly features is a different story. It is in fact a travel-style hack. It exudes your style but eludes you from a fat luggage. Are you ready for the next takeoff?

Timeless Tidiness

Styling your Corporate Wear is challenging. It is about following the company’s dress code while at the same time asserting your own stroke of fashion, fortified with your exemplary work performance. What I mean is, it is not merely dressing up sharply. It is about being known to do so, accompanied with your workmates’ admiration of  you being second to none in achieving your work goals.

For almost eight years in Selling, the work wear fashion has really been changing – colors, patterns, fit and fabric type. Being someone who believes that I should dress according to how I want to be addressed, my office wear style has also bent with the blow of the windy corporate fashion trend. However, after all those years when most of the work wear hype just passed by, a timeless tidy piece stayed. My Selling garb which has remained glorious and has been my drape for the most defining deals of my Selling profession – The White Collar Dress Shirt.

White in Selling

White as a color, owns a strategic appeal in dealing with people to begin with. Preserving its timeless tidy “whiteness” means preserving this appeal to keep you best in dealing with your prospects, towards winning new accounts.

It assures the person you are meeting with that they are not prejudged in terms of the capacity of buying whatever is the tag in the display indicates. Being prejudged is the most apprehensive and annoying lurking a possible buyer should not ever feel. The pleasantness of White makes the prospect feel great spending time with you. How to keep a timeless tidy White Shirt

  1. CHOOSE THE COMFORTABLE FABRIC. Wearing white gives you that mild anxiety of being stained. That is part of the choice of wearing a tidy office wear. An ease from this is to choose a fabric that gives you comfort while in White. Choose those which are light and breathable like Linen and incorporated Cotton like the Oxford. Choose also those which are easier or do not need ironing. Recent offerings in the market now are those which are “super non iron”, “easy iron” and “wrinkle resistant”.
  2. OWN TWO OR EVEN MORE OF THE SAME STYLE. One of the style tricks Don Draper of Mad Men taught me is to own a lot of white corporate shirts and stock these both at the office and at your closet at home. White never sends the idea that you repeatedly wore the same shirt when you have properly took care of its “same as new” whiteness. Thus, it is ideal to own more even of the same style.
  3. TREAT STAINS STAT. May it be a blood stain from a scratch, a pen’s ink or even that stain from after work eat out or booze, I always see to it to soak it with water and detergent as soon as I get home. Leave it overnight before finally washing it.
  4. SORT THE TYPES OF FABRIC WHEN WASHING. Group properly the types of clothes you are washing so that when it comes to drying, the garments are not damaged and still keep their shape. NEVER MIX white shirts with colored garments when washing. Some colored garments may not stain but their strands/ lint may still stick to the white shirt when dried. Removing these can be both time and emotionally consuming.
  5. DOUBLE CHECK. Check the papers left in pockets especially those which stains when wet like the colored calling card and colored post-its. Check also for candy wrappers. Be sure to also remove the collar sticks and other office supplies made from metal or any ink that might lead to staining or tear when washing.
  6. SKIP IRONING or at least de-wrinkle as natural as possible. When I wear it with a blazer, I choose not to press iron it at all. Pressing contributes discoloration to the white shirt base on my perception especially when you are not oriented with the ideal temperature of the electric iron for a specific white piece.

Choosing a washing machine with a technology that alleviates the wrinkling of garments is a big help too.
